The active detection and mitigation of nefarious drones have historically been restricted to the Departments of War, Justice, Energy, and Homeland Security. With the emergence of passive detection technologies, drone awareness and reporting capabilities can now extend to Civilians, Commercial Enterprises, and State-Local-Tribal-Territorial (SLTT) law enforcement agencies.

Once a suspicious drone is detected, a security team can often identify its coordinates and, in many cases, determine and contact the pilot. This enables immediate engagement or a preliminary interview. Alternatively, the collected drone data can be preserved and forwarded to law enforcement to support a formal investigation.
